It's hard to miss all the 'Sound of 2017' lists that populate every music platform at this time of year and the sheer mass of new music can be overwhelming. I'm unsure if I buy into all these speculative checklists so I've gathered together a selection of things I like, new and old, that I hope get more of the coverage they deserve in 2017.
*DISCLAIMER* I'm not a tastemaker, there are genres of music that never have and probably never will float my boat and there's plenty on these 'prediction' lists that makes no sense to me whatsoever. But I like to think I know what I like and this is my modest selection of things to keep your eye on in 2017.
BISHOP BRIGGS - River
"Shut your mouth baby stand and deliver". Punchy, infectious, intelligent.
GALLANT - Weight in Gold
I first heard of Gallant from my producer and it's one of the best recommendations I've had all year. This song is magic - powerful yet subtle, sexy yet understated. I'm sure I'm pretty late to the party but at least I've arrived now! Oh, and if my word wasn't enough, he also topped Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in the music category......
LOUIS BERRY - Restless
Somewhere between Alex Turner and Mumford & Sons would be my clumsy analysis of Louis' voice on first listen. A slow burner and a beautiful sentiment.
DRAGONETTE - Body 2 Body
I haven't been able to get this out of my head since I first heard it a few months ago. Still can't. Still dancing down the street every time it plays on my Spotify.
IDER - Pulse
They've released other more recent tracks but this is the one I can't stop listening to right now...
DAGNY - Backbeat
Yes I know, this song has been out a while... all I'm saying is I hope this is the year we hear ALOT more of her. What a tune.
